Who

If you are looking for an inexpensive flight computer for flight planning, this is it.

What

You can calculate density altitude, true airspeed, ground speed, wind correction angle, fuel used during the flight and time for the leg.

When

You'll find a real need for this once you begin cross country planning. It will be especially helpful when calculating your route for the cross country task given during your checkride.

You'll often use this computer to calculate the heading, fuel required, time to waypoint and groundspeed. These values are typically compared to the GPS groundspeed to monitor the progress and actual changes from the planned flight because of differing actual winds or aircraft performance.

I have found the E6B-P to be a very good value.

Where

You will typically carry this in your flight bag and used for pre-flight planning and during a cross country flight.

The Pilot's Manual: Ground School (ASA-PM-2B) dedicates a chapter on how to use the E6-B Flight Computer, including lots of graphics and review questions.

Why

Inexpensive and easy to learn are the main reasons for using the E6B-P.
